Welcome to Old Man Training

Welcome to my website. Hopefully you will find this a supportive and informative blog, we shall see!

I have been in the gym environment on and off for 30 years, and for the first ten years I think I wasted an awful lot of time and effort. My aim is to spread a bit of wisdom with regards to worked, what didn't work, my routines and dispel a few myths. There is an awful lot of absolute nonsense out there.

This is orientated towards men, because that is my experience, sorry ladies; as much as someone can read around a subject, I can never stand in a woman's shoes.

At some point I will speak to one of the ladies in the gym that I use - there are many that are clearly serious about their training, I just don't want to get pepper-sprayed in the process.

About me (that is not me in the photo)

I was born the same year that Elvis died, and grew up in God's county, Essex, in the UK.

I first became interested in weight training when I was 16 or 17, i.e. about 1993. Times were very different back then, that is for sure. I was quite tubby as a child, despite my best efforts, but more on that later.

I then spent a couple of years at university where the facilities were much better than anything that I had experienced before. That said, in my ignorance I didn't make full use of them. A few years later, I found myself in the army, where my training consistency was extraordinarily sporadic and again although the facilities were generally excellent, I only began to make use of them towards the end of my army career.

Fastforward to today, and I still see young adults weight training, or more accurately 'weight training', making the same mistakes I did, despite all of the information available.  Hopefully I'll be able to pass on a bit of wisdom via this website.

I now live near Ashford in Kent and am married, with two children and two dogs.

My first edit is this - my Son has just made a bet with me for £100.00. I need to look like Steve Reeves in his heyday, and I have five years - no pressure! September 2029 is the deadline.
